Workshop: Small Crops, Big Opportunities

More and more farmers are growing protein- and fibre-rich crops in smaller volumes. Examples include field beans, yellow peas, crops grown through agroforestry, such as walnuts and sweet chestnuts, and rapeseed. Growing these crops is often successful, but how do you ensure that your product also reaches the market? And how can we expand the markets for these smaller-volume crops?

On 13 November 2026, Plant Protein Forward, together with ReGeNL and the Regenerative Agriculture Community, will host the workshop Small Crops, Big Opportunities. During this workshop, we will explore how smaller-volume crops that fit well within a regenerative crop rotation can find their way more successfully into retail, foodservice, processing and short supply chains. Together with buyers, processors and supply chain experts, we will explore questions such as: What does the market need? What opportunities exist for Dutch-grown raw materials? And how can you secure a fair price for smaller volumes?

Through plenary sessions and interactive breakout sessions, you will gain practical insights and have the opportunity to engage directly with experts and other organisations.

What does the program look like?

To provide you with practical guidance, experts from organisations including Rabobank, Provinciaal Eiwitnetwerk NL, Synergy in Food, Vitam, Foodvalley, Distrivers, Bidfood, Jumbo, Royal Smilde, Colzaco, Green Organics and Lekker Lupine will share their experiences of supply chain collaboration, local sourcing and strengthening short food supply chains.

Who is it for?

This workshop is intended for farmers, cooperatives, producer organisations, supply chain partners, processors, buyers, supply chain advisers and regional stakeholders who are active in small-scale plant-based supply chains or want to help expand the markets for these crops.

What will you gain?

You will leave with a clearer understanding of the market potential of your crop or product, or the opportunities to begin growing these crops. You will also gain insight into the requirements of different sales channels and make new connections with whom you can explore possible next steps. The outcomes of the workshop will also provide input for potential follow-up activities within Plant Protein Forward or ReGeNL.
