Future Protein NL: Scaling Dutch Protein Innovation Globally

Since 2020, the Netherlands has had a National Protein Strategy (NES), developed in line with European ambitions to increase protein self-sufficiency. Over the past few years, it has become clear that the Netherlands, with its wealth of knowledge and innovation, can contribute far beyond its own borders. While other countries and regions are actively scaling up their sustainable protein solutions and connecting supply and demand on a global level, the Netherlands has yet to fully engage internationally. That’s why exploring an international component of the NES is both timely and necessary to ensure Dutch expertise and innovation in sustainable proteins can make a global impact.

From local innovation to global impact

Therefore, exploring an international component of the NES, where Dutch sustainable protein knowledge and innovations achieve global impact, is desirable.

Foodvalley and Larive International (bringing in the perspective from the feed sector), commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LVVN), are currently working on this. Through interviews with a wide range of stakeholders, they are shaping a compelling international narrative for the Netherlands and identifying key building blocks for successful global implementation of the strategy.

This initiative builds on earlier efforts that demonstrate the potential of Dutch sustainable protein solutions, including:

Every week, investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and other stakeholders seek connections with Dutch partners. While many receive strong support, it often depends on where they knock. The absence of a clear national anchor point, linking the Netherlands to the world and vice versa, is a missed opportunity, risking the country’s leadership position and untapped value potential.

With rising international interest, increased activity, and compelling ecological and economic drivers, momentum is building. A well-defined international component within the National Protein Strategy is now more important than ever.

We are working to change that, shaping a compelling international narrative for the Netherlands and identifying key building blocks for successful global implementation of the strategy.
