Food 2040: Keeping the Netherlands at the Forefront of Agrifood Innovation

WAGENINGEN, 4 June, 2026 – At this week’s TKI’s AgriFoodTop, Food 2040 was a recurring thread across topics and sessions, and for good reason. Internationally, investments in agrifood technology are accelerating while domestically, gaps in talent, scaling capacity and long-term policy are holding back our full potential.

Food 2040: the coordinated response as follow-up of ‘Rapport Wennink’

Food 2040 is the coordinated response, a national investment agenda developed as part of the follow-up of “Rapport Wennink”, aimed at keeping the Netherlands a frontrunner in high-tech, sustainable food production through to 2040.

One of its flagships focuses on Bio- and Process Technology for New Ingredients. Here, Foodvalley is a driving force alongside NextFoodCollective and Wageningen University & Research, having brought together a broad coalition of stakeholders, from startups to corporates to develop and shape this agenda.

The next step is translating Food 2040 into concrete investment proposal, turning ambition into action.
